I'm hosting a Brent Coats' family reunion - my brothers and sisters and their families. Sadly, my parents are off on another motorcycle trip and my older brother, Justin, can't come. But it should be a lot of fun for those who do show up! We're going to swim, eat, play night games, eat, watch an outside movie with a projector, eat some more.
Why is it every time we get together we focus so much on food? I'm not sure if that's a nurture or nature thing. I don't know if you're this way, but I have many happy memories centered around big meals, treats, and going for ice cream or out to dinner. It's so hard when you're with family to turn down food. I've got a new theory - I only eat things that are rotten for my body if I absolutely love them. Unless it's chocolate or ice cream (hopefully a combination) I won't touch it. I know it's not an earth-shaking theory, but it does save me from ingesting food just because a family member cooked it - now if I could just figure out how to not offend my loved ones by saying no!
I hope you all have a fabulous weekend.

I think that is an EXCELLENT theory! We have a similar thing that helps us limit the 'bad' stuff. About a year ago we decided to eliminate transfats from our diet. It eliminated a LOT of foods that weren't all that healthy, and some that were down right AWFUL!
I sort of try to look at it this way.... a special occasion or a gathering of sorts generally does include food, maybe even a feast of food. There is never a reason for over-eating to the point of discomfort, but it is an opportunity to eat so many good things. So, knowing that I do want BBQ ribs and potato salad and strawberry shortcake...or knowing I want a cheeseburger and chips and a beer...or knowing I want macaroni & meatballs, garlic bread, and then birthday cake and ice cream...I am going to have those things.
But, I am not going to eat those things as part of my regular diet, my noramal daily intake of food. That's when I try to eat healthy and stick to it, with a very controlled treat once in awhile if it fits in calorie-wise. And, when I am at a party or out to dinner, I choose what I really "must" have, so that I can eliminate the least important things from my plate altogether and maybe only "sample" the other things...even the sampling is monitored closely.
Another rule I have...if I gain any weight, I am not allowed any treats until that weight comes off. I have to be on or back at my "starting" weight before ANY food or exercise cheating is allowed at all.
